I have my laptop connected to my new Dell 1920x1200 monitor, via HDMI to DVI cable. My Laptop display is 1366x768. The Dell monitor is set to it's full resolution 1920x1200. The two displays set to "Extend these display" setting.
1. The problem is the display on the Dell monitor is letter boxed with 3 inch black border. I am unable to get rid of it, except by changing the Dell monitor display resolution to 1280x800. This of course negates the purpose of getting a high resolution monitor. How to get the display to full screen on my Dell monitor with the resolution set at 1920x1200?
2. Strangely I found out that Instead of my HDMI out of Laptop, if I use the VGA out ( Blue connector) and connect to VGA in, I am getting the full screen display on my Dell monitor set to 1920x1200. So the problem is with HDMI signal only I think.

I am aware that HDMI gives better quality compared to the ancient VGA cable. But I am unable to go full screen on HDMI in connection
Can some one help? I am running Windows 7 on my Laptop which is also a Dell make.

The aspect ratio setting is specific to input - you can set it to 16:10 for one connection and 4:3 for another. It should be correct by default, though.

The fact that it works at a lower resolution points me to your GPU drivers. Does the laptop have Optimus/Switchable Graphics? If so, check that both the Intel and AMD/nVidia drivers are up to date.

Is there anything else you can try with? Another laptop or desktop?

There is no problem with aspect ratio. If the letter boxing does not occur when I use VGA cable, or if I set the display resolution to lower 1280x800 when I use the DVI, the problem and it's resolution has to be something else, I think. GPU drivers are the current.

Thanks for your prompt replies.
The aspect ratio is correct. I will check if the drivers are up to date or not. It should be though.
I have a desktop (A very ancient piece compared to my Laptop). It has an ATI display card with DVI output, which when connected to the same Dell monitor is able to display at 1920x1200 resolution without any problem.
As I said before the problem arise only with my Laptop HDMI output connected to the DVI port through a HDMI/DVI cable.
I have no problem with it's VGA output which is able to give a full resolution display.

I have checked my laptop display and graphic card drivers. They have the latest updates.
