As the title says, I'm looking for an upgrade for my system and since I haven't been tracking the marker lately, I came to you.

current system:

Intel Core i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz (OC-ed to 4.3 with Noctua NH-D14 cooler)
OCZ GameXstreme 750W PSU
Asus P8Z68-V PRO GEN3 MBO
8GB RAM DDR3-1600 (2x 4Gb G.skill Ripjaws)
XFX HD6950 DD 2GB

so, basically, its 2 years old system which is used for gaming primarily.
what upgrades would you recommend up to 500 dollars?

What's the monitor/s resolution/s?
Cards like the GTX780/R9 290 really don't come into their own until the resolution is at 1440 or you're using dual monitors.
Not saying either of those beasts won't be a huge upgrade, but the R9 280/GTX770 class would be a less expensive upgrade and better matched to the rest of the system.
Be aware the reference cooled R9 280x/280 can run hot and noisy, if you opt for one of these look for a card with a dual fan cooler, they'll be more expensive but the extra brass will be well spent.
That's still a great gaming CPU, especially with that OC. The Ram and PSU is also more than adequate for modern gaming.

Well since you stated up to $500 the best cards in that price point would be the 290/290x and the 780.

I'd advise waiting for the release of the 290/290x non reference cooled cards (since the bloody things run at 90 degrees under load). It's obvious that you'd be going for a high end card so the wait for those cards would be worth it.
