I put together a ~$1200 PC build for my friend, what do you all think.

Ignore the purchased bits like the Case/Optical Drive/OS as I'm thinking he can just reuse what he already has.

I haven't done much research but it seems at this price point the 4670k/R9 290 combo is the best, going to wait for non-reference R9 290's to show up however.

Looking for ways to maybe save money on this build without giving up a ton of performance.

Solid build, be wary on the RAM though, the one you chose works at 1.6V and the Intel Haswell recommended working voltage is 1.5V, as PcPartPicker cleverly states at the bottom of the page.

Thanks, I completely forgot about checking that. I tried finding the RAM I used for my system which runs at some super low voltage, (http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Extreme-MV-3V4G3-US/dp/B0059200FY) but apparently its discontinued.

If you check there are two sellers that may be able to provide you with some although one ships from China and the other from Minnesota.
