About 2 days ago, we started getting a pop-up on some of the systems here:

"wmiprvse.exe - Application Error. The exception unknown software exception (0xc0000409) occurred in the application at location 0x46af7242."

Our setup is:

Windows XP, SP3 with all the latest updates installed (Dell Optiplex 740 desktops)

We're running Panda Cloud anti-virus along with Malwarebytes (the paid-for version) and neither have reported any problems.

I also took several copies (from different systems) of "wmiprvse.exe" and scanned them on virustotal.com and virusscan.jotti.org and both reported they were clean.

Any help or advice as to the problem would be appreciated.

Hello... I remember this one from years ago... you need to stop the "VerizonServicepoint" from starting and running in the background... type MSCONFIG and locate it in the "Services" and stop it/disable it... if it persists check the "boot" section and "Startup" Folder in Windows to stop or remove it... do a Disk search for it and delete that worthless CPU HOG File/Folder

Thanks, but those solutions you pointed out aren't relevant.

The 1st link refers to a 2004 malware but that ain't the case here.

The 2nd link refers to basically the same as the 1st link.

The 3rd link refers to a solution when there's high CPU utilization, but is for OS' other than XP.

I've done lots of net searches so far to no avail. I'm hoping someone has something new(er) to offer up.

Thanks, but we're not running any Verizon software on our systems.

Yeah...

Except I can guarantee that it hasn't "crept" onto any of our systems.
