is it required that my cpu be "k" edition to overclock my ram since it effects the cpu? say using a XMP overclocking profile would want to increase cpu speed with ram or no? jus the voltages?

Dont overclock your ram for gaming.
When you overclock your ram, you overclock the frequency, when you overclock your frequency, the responsetime also known as CAS latency.

What in the world are you even asking?

You don't need to overclock your RAM, period. You need an unlocked (k-series) CPU paired with a Z series motherboard to overclock the CPU frequency.

Just for some clarification:

You can overclock a non-K Ivy Bridge generation CPU by about 400MHz using multipliers options on a Z77 motherboard. Non-K Haswell generation CPUs cannot be overclocked at all.

I mean when I buy 2400 mhz ram and use it in a board with an i7 it forces me to use an xmp overclock profile to get the motherboard to give the proper voltages to run at the speed it was rated for. perhaps my post was misleading? or would my scenario be dumb and anything above 1600 ram is bad for i series cpus?

so if I could get 2133 speed ram for the same price as 1600 and same quality, 1600 would be the correct choice?
