I have a i7-920 12 gb ddr3 ram with a gtx 690 on a gigabyte 3 udp motherboard. On bf3 or 4 even on medium i can only get about 35 fps. In mutiplayer it will hit 100 for a second then 30 then 40 then 30; it is all over the place. My windows score is a 5.9

Solution
The i7 920 is still a very capable CPU, but it has a very low stock clock. If you get an aftermarket HSF and OC your CPU to 3.5 - 4.0 Ghz, it will be very similar in performance as the latest i5 at stock. Unfortunately, if you leave it at stock, you may run into bottlenecks a lot.

I have never tried to OC my computer. My comp skills are limited. its at 2.6 ghz right now. My drivers are up to date as of a few days ago. Im at a loss for what to do. I ran a furmark program (read about it on internet) to see my score and it was 4300 at 80 fps in 1080 mode.

I noticed while playing if i look at ground or water my fps is 150 or so then when i look up it drops to 40. During combat it is in the 20's. this was on battlfield 4.

when i playe borderlands too on ultra everything was fine??

borderlands 2 even on ultra does not compare to BF4. borderland 2 is based on very dated unreal engine 3. the only way to make it a bit more demanding is by enabling gpu physx but even 690 should be able to handle the game on max setting + gpu physx with ease. BF4 is based on the new Frostbite Engine 3.0 (BF4 will be the first game to come out with the engine commercially). it is much more modern engine then UE3 and has been design to take advantage current high end setup. as such running the game on high to ultra setting can have large impact on performance even on good hardware.

but i take your problem have more to do with underpowered cpu. the recent battlefield series are quite demanding on cpu especially when playing multi player portion of the game. when in heavy combat with many players drop in FPS is expected. overclocking might help a bit. you can ask for more detail regarding OC if you post a thread on OC section
