Yep, a linux distro like Linux Mint or Zorin would bring new life to that old machine.

Here's a fairly cheap gaming PC build

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($117.97 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: Xigmatek GAIA SD1283 56.3 CFM CPU Cooler ($31.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($63.75 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($59.65 @ OutletPC)
Video Card:...
What's your motherboard? it probably has an AGP or only PCI slot. If it's AGP, the best AGP gpu made was the 4670 AGP.

This Geforce 610 is a decent PCI card, but it won't really be playing games well

Sadly, no amount of upgrades to that old rig will make it decent for modern gaming. Dual cores have become barely enough for games so an old Pentium 4 won't be playing anything modern smoothly.

If you want to play newer games, you'll have to get a new system.

I have to agree to the op above me sadly your throwing money out the window its been a good pc time to upgrade or move on.
No one wants you to waste your hard earned cash here on something that isnt going to provide any real benifits for you so with that said save your money build or buy better .. Hope this helps and sorry..

Just my 2 cents!

But I got a quicky here for you!!!! that old system you could download linux and run alot of there games if you learn how to use it but it wont be the games that are we are using on windows today you could turn it into a servewr a lite one, also you could turn it into a someone media center, also you could go out and find alot of the older games before that pc was made and run a bunch of your old favs....

Again I hope this helps..

Just my 2 cents!

Solution

Buy a whole new computer. Everything will be bottlenecked by your current specs; 1GB RAM? lol
