Hi all,

I'm in the process of replacing the stock 4200rpm 100GB HDD of my Sony Vaio TZ180n with an SSD. I bought a 64GB Runcore Pro IV PATA Zif plus but when I install it, the BIOS wont recognize it. When I try to connect it via the included USB adapter to another computer it isn't recognized there either (the HDD I am attempting to replace works just fine through the same USB adapter).

Question is- Is there some sort of priming I need to do for this SSD or was it just DOA?

Thanks!

Solution

I recently upgraded a VGN-TZ150N HDD to a mSATA SSD using an adapter. I had an issue where my drive wasn't reading through...

Thanks for the reply.

I haven't made a partition. I'm not sure how to do so- I can't find any way to interact with it.

plug it into a computer and:

click start -> right click computer / my computer and click manage -> click disk management -> in the bottom half you should see a disk that has "unallocated" space on it, if you do right click it and click format and make sure it will format in NTFS not FAT / FAT32

That's precisely the issue. I think I've misworded it in my original post. When I plug the *new* SSD into another computer using the supplied Zif-to-USB adapter, it isn't recognized. It doesn't show up in explorer or in the disk management tool.

However my old HDD is recognized fine with the same adapter which leads me to rule out any issues with the connection.

Yeah, I think I'll try to send it back. I just wanted to hear someone else come to the same conclusion so I know I'm not making some glaring omissions.

The Crucial drive would have been great, but I'm trying to upgrade a pretty old machine (purchased in late 2007) so I don't think it'll support SATA III. and it's a tiny one... so the only HDDs that will fit in there are 1.8" with Zif connectors. I saw a thread elsewhere about someone doing the same upgrade and they used a RunCore so I figured it would be a safe bet since I can't seem to find any produced by more reputable brands.

Thanks for your replies.

Before you RMA does anything show up in Device Manager?

I recently upgraded a VGN-TZ150N HDD to a mSATA SSD using an adapter. I had an issue where my drive wasn't reading through the BIOS. I then decided to flip the drive/adapter around and reconnected to the ZiF ribbon cable and it recognized.

For reference I purchased the following adapter:
mSATA to 1.8" ZIF Adapter:

I installed the following mSATA SSD:
SAMSUNG MZMPC128HBFU-000L1 : 128.0 GB

Benchmark Results:

CrystalDiskMark 3.0.3 (C) 2007-2013 hiyohiyo
