I have two LSI 9271-4i's, each on a Sabertooth 990FX Rev 2 motherboard. The Rev 1.01 board is listed on LSI's Compatibility List so when I was going to purchase RAID cards because Adaptec refused to update their drivers to Windows 8, I asked LSI if they thought their cards would work on the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX Rev 2 board. I believe they said something like they should. They didn't say they would for sure. So I bought the LSI cards and got some controller fatal errors so I had to roll the firmware back, I believe it was, and then things seemed to work ok but I would get errors in Windows Event Viewer related to their card when going into Sleep or Hibernation Mode which at least are not major issues. I found to my dismay that their hard drive activity light function didn't work. After some hassle, I found that it was acknowledged that it stopped working on some cards after a firmware upgrade and the company is not responsive in fixing it!

Toward the last, before I upgraded to Windows 8.1, I believe it was, I was able to upgrade to the latest drivers and firmware without any fatal controller errors. Some of my system files were getting corrupted though and appeared to be causing significant problems and I still had the errors when going into Sleep or Hibernation mode so it was suggested that I try their latest drivers and firmware that had recently come out, so I did. I found out that wasn't a good idea, since it made my computer almost unusable. After putting up with that for around one day, I rolled the updates back, I believe on February 1st.

Since then, I have made sure that two settings in Advanced Power Options have been changed so that the hard drives and PCI bus are not turned off by Windows power management. There still is an issue with the ASUS board turning off the PCI bus, while the computer is running I am told by LSI. I have contacted ASUS but it is very difficult to deal with them concerning issues like this plus I've had many problems with the Sabertooth boards. (I have RMA'd too many.) I have issues escalated up to the Manager of Customer Care but it is frustrating dealing with their whole Support system. The truth is that they don't really care, it seems, to resolve things fast and then they might send me another board which has a problem. I emailed the Customer Care Manger approximately one year ago twice and never heard from him.

I have tried turning off ASUS's EPU Power Saving Mode to see if it makes any difference but haven't run a log testing program to see if it has helped. The Manager of LSI's Support has told me that ASUS's boards are more problematic or something like that. The LSI RAID cards apparently do not work well with the newer power management functions on motherboards and do not appear to be compliant with the newer Advanced Configuration & Power Interface (ACPI) specs. See info about ACPI at: http://acpi.info/ . I understand that the LSI boards are meant to be installed on server boards and run all the time of course.

So, I would not suggest using LSI cards on ASUS desktop motherboards. The LSI cards might work fine if you're going to put them on a server board and don't have a need to use the drive activity light.
