New PC, windows 7, plug ethernet into cable modem - no internet. ISP says no user name/password req'd, just plug it in, it should work.

If I switch to wireless, that works.

Help?

Check in your device manager to see if the Ethernet (LAN) controller shows up and indicates that it is working properly. Could be turned off in the bios or not have a driver installed.

What cable modem model? If you can use wireless with it, it must be a combo modem and router, unless you meant that you can use wireless with another network.

That should fix the problem once installed.

Hmmm. The MoBo mfg offers only a network ethernet utility. It requests a username/password for the isp, who require none. So I leave it blank. No, doesn't connect. So I am reduced to wireless until I figure this out. Wrong mobo? Ha, ha, haaaaa..

Nope, they have a driver called the Killer Network Driver HERE.

Yes, that's the one that demands a username/password for my ISP. ISP tells me all I should need to do is plug the ethernet cable in. Killer doesn't like that, won't connect..

I know that that NIC has been pretty buggy and I've seen recommendations to turn off all of its management software and disable the Qualcomm Atheros Killer service in both the task manager startup items and in services via msconfig.

I would send an email to MSI support detailing the issue, they apparently have some other drivers that they can give you access to.

Thanks to all who replied. My mobo has been RMA'd. I plan on a hardware ethernet when the replacement board arrives.

I highly recommend the Intel PCIe card HERE if you decide to go that way.

Excellent! I would turn off the Killer NIC in the bios when you do the new build.

Thanks for the reminder RealBeast.

BTW, I should compliment MSI tech support. I had a tech on the phone within 1 minute 30 seconds (!) on two different occasions (!!) and they were helpful in trouble-shooting the board to the point where we knew it was bad. Now if the replacement is good..

OK, I received the replacement motherboard this morning - exactly one week from the time I dropped the dead one off with UPS - and all is well. I went with an Intel hardware ethernet controller, which Windows 7 recognized and I was connected to the internet without so much as a keystroke from me.

So fantastic turn-around from NewEgg, and thanks all for your help.
