Hi.

I've been searching for some time now, and can't seem to find the answer. I find some good prices on the GTX 780 Asus DCII here in Norway. Like $50 over stock R9 290. I play on a 1080p monitor 60hz. I could wait until the non-reference 290 coolers would be available, also able to wait for 780 Ghz edition.

FYI, I play almost every game, so that's no factor me.

Rest of the set-up would be something like:
i5 4670k
Asus Hero VI
8GB RAM
Samsung 840 Evo 250GB

Any thoughts?

Honestly, unless you're running a 120hz monitor (or 1440p+) there is no reason to spend $500+ on a GPU. You're going to be able to get a consistent 60FPS out of games using a $300-400 GPU just the same.

The GTX 770 or R9 290 would be more than enough, but if you want to go "all out" I would lean towards the GTX 780 (or Ghz). I have a real issue with AMD's marketing. They are claiming their cards run at speeds that aren't sustained (Due to heat) more than a few minutes in game, and it seems there is a real variance in what you could get out of the box.

Read this before deciding:

If you want to go with an AMD, wait until the 3rd party coolers come out. Do NOT buy a reference card, as you just don't know what you're going to get out of the box. No two cards are going to perform the same, but the situation AMD is in is shameful. Based strictly on appearances, they may have attempted to deceive their way into the #1 performance slot (short lived as it was).

I'm currently using a Asus GTX 780 Direct Cu II. It runs cold, quiet and smooth. I really like the way it looks in the case and it handles my 2560x1440 monitor with ease, even in BF4 on Ultra (2xMSAA - it will run 4x, but 2x is much smoother).

TLDR; My thoughts are, don't buy an AMD until we see reference coolers or drivers that fix their performance disparities.

Yeah I've been thinking of going with a lower end GPU, but the price difference isn't that huge, especially after the release of the R9 290.

I'll be waiting for non-reference coolers and see how they perform.
