Hey there I'm looking for some opinions!

I've got 2 gtx 680s running in SLI right now but they are the 2gb models and while I do love them I believe I'm running out of VRAM because when playing a game at 1080p while watching a movie on my television at 1080p the movie tends to get choppy but if I lower the resolution on the game or lower the movie resolution then It will play fine (unless I'm in a heavy action scene in the movie at the same time as a large fight in the game). So what I was planning on doing was selling the 680s to get the 290 because I feel as if I just do not have enough VRAM.

Either way the graphics cards would be watercooled by around December- January time so the heat from the 290 won't be a huge issue.

This happens very rarely
My setup:
i7 3770k
ASRock Extreme4 Z77
32GB 1866Mhz G.Skill Ripjaws X
XFX 1000W platinum PSU
GTX680 SLI
Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler.

Also, the motherboard is going to be upgraded soon to an EATX board so disregard that.

do you have any idea how much a downgrade that would be? and are you really paying that close attention to both? do yourself a favor and check your gpu vram usage while doing both activities before you waste a bunch of money downgrading

Well best performance option is not to watch a movie while gaming. It is not only graphics that are being shared other resources as well.
Have you consider an HTPC build for your movies.

Thanks for the reply, I realise how much of a downgrade that would be, I just want opinions on what people would do. I'm gaming 1080p 60hz. The 680s in sli is way too much power for that and honestly I won't waste any money because I don't have a whole lot in the cards because I got them off of Craigslist for an amazing price

I'm pretty sure the rest of my system can handle both a movie and game at the same time, I don't see why I would waste already 200$ on an htpc when I could lose roughly 50$ and what I believe to be a not noticeable amount of performance.

I know this is odd but building an grove is just not worth it. Already with this I'm open to xfire with the 290 and I will end up with a lot better performance In the end. Plus I will save money not having to Watercool two cards

680's are ridiculously priced right now and have had no luck finding used ones and even if I did, they would have to be well priced and I would need 2 to be better than the 290

Personally I would say keep the setup you have now, especially because 290s have a lot of issues ATM. But in the end, just do whatever is gonna make you happy because you have to live with it :p
