Can't connect to Minecraft Servers??

I recently just bought minecraft online after playing it too much on the xbox. I would watch SkyDoesMinecraft, and i loved how he was able to play little minigames with his friends. I REALLY wanted to start playing online. Now that i have installed it, I cant connect to any online servers. I have the new version of 1.7.2. None of my friends no how to help, and neither does my family. Can any one please help me it would be greatly appreciated!!

some servers are version specific it would help to look up those servers check the version they run on then the change your minecraft version to that of the server if that does not work then is your internet on?
