Hey all,

I'm looking to purchase either a 780 gtx ti or R9 290x to upgrade my system. My current card is nvidia 480 gtx. I was comparing the specs online and I saw that the new cards requires PCI-E 3.0. My card only has PCI-E 2.0. Will I need to get a new motherboard to be able to upgrade?

Thanks!

No the PCIe std is fully backwards compatible and the 3.0 cards work fine in 2.0 slots!

@rolli59: can you elaborate a bit on this as I'm in the same situation. will performance be sub-optimal if you install a new gpu in a pci-e 2.0 slot?

With previous gen high end cards the penalty was 1% http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Ivy_Bridge_PCI... It is probably very similar.
