Hi I am building a pc. I have a cd drive that needs a 5 pin power plug. I pluged it into the 4 pin fan plug and it started smoking. What should I do, where should I plug in the cd drive.

That is my mobo

PS the smoke smelled nasty.

As mentioned above, the samsung is the same, for all intents and purposes.

Here is an image of the original. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-657534-FC2-DVD-model-SN-208-/251320648275?pt=US_CD_DVD_Blu_Ray_Drives&hash=item3a83e0c253

It has a power connector that fits a standard hard drive power ribbon, and a standard sata connector. There is no such thing as a 5 pin power connector. There is nowhere on your optical drive to connect one to and there are no options to connect on from any PSU that I'm aware of. The closest thing to a fan header connection that I'm aware of, is a mini-molex but they have 4 wires, not 5.

In order to connect this mystery 5 pin connector to your fan header, you must have also managed to connect it to your optical drive. I'm curious as to how you've achieved this. The only possible conclusion that I can reach is that you plugged a SATA cable into your optical drive and plugged the other end onto your fan header. If you're lucky, the smoke that you spoke of was just your SATA cable burning. If not, it's likely that you've damaged your optical drive.

Power is almost always derived directly from the PSU, with the exception of fan headers, which are specifically designed to power fans.

I explained all of this in your previous post yesterday, why have you redirected me here and made me rewrite my answer, instead of simply answering what I said? No ingenious insight is going to come of duplicating posts or threads. You have done something seriously wrong and most likely damaged or ruined your equipment. Computers are designed to be assembled and reassembled. there are fairly uniform standards when in comes to connectors and fittings. If you're using something other than what is being described then you need to upload a picture of what you are using. The connections on your optical drive are bog standard. It sounds like the cable you are using may not be designed for the purpose you are using it.
