I'm planning to build my first rig, but where I live, it's not possible to get the exact graphics card I want (they keep going in and out of stock)...I therefore have to go to the market with a couple of options in mind.

I'm currently set on the GTX 760 (any of its variants are fine), but I'd like to know which card would be an equivalent performer at that cost (~$200-$300). I'm not choosy about the brand, I could go with either Nvidia or AMD.

These are the best versions of the 760 at their respective price point

The AMD equivalent of the 760 would be the Radeon 7950.

As suggested already you could look into the 7970/280x, if you can get one around $300 then it would be a worthwhile investment, so it'd probably be your best choice.

The 770 could also be found for around $330, and that is also a fairly big step up.

Just hope that your PSU meets the requirements and you have a nice case to fit it in :D

Thanks for that! I actually stay in India, so the GPUs here are unfortunately much costlier. Oh, and the PSU I'm going for is the Corsair TX650...should be good enough, right? The case will be an NZXT Phantom 530.

I went to the market today, and found these prices:
Zotac GTX 760: ~$296
R9 280x: ~$416
Also found that the 660 Ti costs around $215, because I thought it might be similar in performance. (they told me another step down would be the GTX 650 for around $176, but that performance is probably out of the question, I suppose)

This really changes the perspective, doesn't it? I'm sure the 280X is not quite worth that price :(

I'll want to keep this card for the next 2-3 years, but my budget is around $300....the GTX 760 should probably be my best option, right? Also, would it be a better idea to simply get the 660 Ti right now, and then upgrade in a year or so?
