A few weeks ago I got a Gigabyte 280x windforce 3x and yesterday I tried to overclock it and got some interesting results. First I overclocked the gpu to 1150MHz and tested it with 3Dmark Fire Strike and got a graphics score of 8602 points. When overclocking the memory I got some really weird results, overclocked by only 20 MHz my 3Dmark score dropped to 8430 points. What could be the problem?

Try running the test a few more times with the memory overclocked and it at normal speeds. It could just be a outlier. Run it a few more times and get averages for both to see if it is really lower. (Also try some other benchmarks)

Also, Im pretty sure this isnt it, but is your voltage high enough?

I did an average of 2 runs at stock clocks and got a score of 8354 then overclocked the memory only by 25MHz and got a score of 8198. I also tested it in Unigine Heaven and got a score of 921(36.6FPS) at stock and a score of 912(36.2FPS) with the memory overclocked. The voltage on my card is locked.

Hm, its strange it doesn't effect the second bench test at all. It is a possibility that since the voltage is locked it gets close to it (on the overclocked test) and thus suffers a little bit because it isnt getting enough power, but it's not enough to shut it down completely.

One note though, since you dont have a 512 bit bus (you have a 384 I believe), the memory overclock wouldnt do that much anyways.

I ran Unigine Heaven again, this time with the memory overclocked by 100MHz and got a score of 926 but its not stable and it crashed after the benchmark. Seems like the memory on this gpu is kind of bad. I keep having bad luck with overclocking gpus, Ill leave it at stock clocks for now.
