hi there,
should i get a new r9 270x with 1100mhz gpu and 5800mhz m.clock, or the hd7950 with 3gb ram, 800gpu and 5000mhz m.clock.is it just the 384 bit on the 7950 that makes it better??
cheers.

There is a difference in the performance potential of both cards. I would suspect the major reason for the R9 270x pulling ahead in those benchmarks would be the significantly higher clock speed the chip is being run at, as the 270x has 1280 shader cores to the 7950's 1792. You would likely need to overclock the 7950 to make it significantly better than the 270x out of the box, but if you think about it, being an up-clocked 7870 the 270x is likely already at the upper limits of it's clocking ability, whereas the 7950 is more likely clocked conservatively.

If you plan to overclock, I would lean toward the 7950, otherwise I would go with StarBG's charts and lean toward the 270x. If you do plan to overclock, it would be worth looking into just what numbers people tend to hit with the 7950 cards.

so with some small overclocking the r9 will be closer still.i get confused with the memory clocks

The 7950 will beat the R9 270x in memory bandwidth, despite it's lower clocks. It has a wider bus. The 7950 has been known to clock up very well, to the point it would beat an R9 280x. I have no idea how well the R9 270x would overclock, as it's essentially a clocked up card to begin with.
