Hi! I put together my (first) computer last night, but when i started it the screen couldn't get a signal, so I tried taking out one RAM and it worked, but after a moment it was a click-sound somewhere (probably the cpu or motherboard) and now the cpu red light is on and my keyboard and mouse isn't getting any power through the motherboard.

I've reset bios but it doesn't work anyways.

All component's fans are working so everything's getting power, but I'm afraid something's broken. :(

I've read all the "check this before you ask"- thingys and I tried them all but it doesn't work anyways..

mobo: Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0
cpu: AMD FX-8350 8 4.0GHz
RAM: Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) CL9 1600MHz
psu: Corsair CX 500M 80+ Bronze Modulär
graphics card: EVGA GeForce GTX 760 2GB

Have you tried swapping your ram over? CPU's and motherboards don't have much in the way of things that go click, so visual inspection may lead you to find something odd. Are you using a HDD for OS? because they do make clicking sounds when they are dead.

Yes I tried swappin the RAMs over. I get no screen and the USB ports are not working so I'm thinking it might be the motherboard? it was more of a cracking sound, like something was breaking. :(

HDD for OS? You mean a separate? Then no, I've only got one!

Worth mentioning is that the CPU is still getting warm so it's doing something I guess? Just the USB ports don't work.

I have no idea, I'm really bad with computers so I hope I didn't screw this one up..

When you say "the cpu is getting warm" do you have a heatsink and fan covering the CPU?

You should do, it's essential.

If you do, remove it and inspect the thermal paste. Trapped air bubbles heat and may make as popping sound air was forced out. Not a gentle pop pop, a once off blow out.

If you don't have one, or the heatsink is incorrectly seated in a rather extreme way, you could be throttling the CPU before you can even achieve post. AMD CPU's are notoriously hot. Google "dot method" for optimum heatsink performance.

Nothing should randomly crack. Once installed, your motherboard should not be prone to snapping. When you install motherboards and heatsinks, ensure that screws are done up firmly but do not over tighten. "Firm" is a term used by indoor types, not tradesmen. Silicon chips are not a far cry from glass and should be treated as fragile.

I should point out that once broken, silicon chips also tend to be beyond repair - also damage should be visible.

And no, I did not mean separate. I meant a platter style disk, as opposed to SSD. Even with a damaged HDD though, you should be able to get something on screen.

I meant that since the cpu isn't cold when starting, it must work? Someway? Anyways, I've got a cpu fan and I also know the problem now.. I've made the biggest newbie mistake that might have cost me a whole lot of money if I'm unlucky. I just followed the instructions in the motherboard manual...it said nothing about the bronze standoffs and there was small "standoffs" already so I thought they were enough but I guess they weren't and it must have touched the chassi when I screwed it on.

The backside of the motherboard, the little things are bent. Nothing is burnt and there's no smell, but I'm guessing that's the problem and hopefully it's only the motherboard that's broken.. Tried with the bronze standoffs and the same result as before but it definitely fits better in the chassi now :p

Anyways, thank you Szyrs for helping me anyway and sorry for taking your time on such a classic failure. :)

Best Regards,
A complete idiot.
