I was on my computer last night when all of a sudden my computer screen went black. I could still hear some sound in my headphones but it was a repeating noise. I thought the freeze was due to overheat or something so I went to sleep in hope of it working the next morning.

When I then turned on the computer the next morning I could hear the computer turning on and the hardisk working but I still did not get any response on the screen.

So I tried unplugging everything in my computer and plug it back in again but that did not help and now i can't use the power button to turn the computer off.

So my question is has my graphic card stopped working or is it something else?

My specs are:
GPU: Sapphire At Radeon HD 5970.
CPU:AMD Phenom II X4 965.
RAM: 8GB DDR3
Motherboard: Gigabyte Ga-770TA-UD3
PS: Energon 1000W (I know it is bad)

I have not OC'ed any of it and the computer was bought about 3 years ago.

More about : 5970 died

The best think you could do is to borrow from a friend or another computer a video card. Check and then see if the screen works. If it works your card died.

Hi
Remove the GPU card out of the PC
Power on the PC
If you hear beep sound that`s mean that you Mobo is OK and detect "NO GPU card "
Power off
Try to install other GPU card to test - some old working card , some friend GPU card

THe other possible cause is the PSU - looks impossible to overload and fail 1000W but hwo knows ...
You can try with other PSU to isolate the problem

Okay so I tried removing the GPU and turning the computer on. It did not beep but the dvd-drive worked and the usb drive seemed to work to.

Ok ... 2 posible conclusions
- you main board is not having system speaker connected
- you main board is failed

Power OFF
Add the GPU back
Now remove the RAM
Power on
You must hear beeps for missing ram
If you not - states above comply again

update :
you mobo manual :
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=...

10) F_PANEL (Front Panel Header) - make shure you connect this one speaker

I connected the F-PANEL and the power button worked again.
but when i removed the ram and put in the graphic card there were still no beep sounds. Now I am wondering if the freeze and black screen could have been caused by a defect DVI wire?

Confirm :
Did you ever hear an beeps from you PC ?
If you did then you Sys SPEAKER is connected
Assuming this , you mobo is FAILED

Now i have this memory glinch :)
Remove the Power cord from you PSU for 10 min. and add all back - GPU , RAM
Boot OS ?

If no ...
You badly need to tests you GPU , RAM , PSU , CPU on other PC
If you GPU or RAM works on other PC then it`s you Mobo

No I did not hear any beeps. I tried your method and I got black screen again. I will try to test the other components as soon as possible on another pc.
But thanks for your help :)

You can take you GPU and PSU to be tested on other PC
