choosing a powerful CPU

Dear community,

First of all I have to mention that the specs I'm looking for are to simulate & render high end visual effects and not for gaming.

A year ago, I build a system with the following specs.
i7 3930K 3.2 Ghz
32 GB Ram
GeForce GTX 670 - 4 GB Ram

At the moment I'm looking for more powerful rig to build. It must be for sure 16core (32 Threads).
It's the first time that I will get involve with Xeon processors and I'm a bit confused so I would like your opinion.
Which one is the best in the market regrading performance & value ?
I was looking for Xeon sandy bridge: (ivy seems far expensive at the moment)
Xeon E5-2650 v2 - 2.6 Ghz
either
Xeon e5 2687w - 3.4 GHz

The Xeon e5 2687w seems to be faster than Xeon E5-2650 v2.
Do you recommend any other processor ?

The best rendering CPU out there is the INTEL XEON E5-2687W

He already has a 3930K which destroys anything AMD has to offer.

My concern would be that neither one of the chips you listed would be a big enough upgrade to justify the cost for you. Especially if you have overclocked the 3930K at all. If I were to get one of those, I would get the e5 2687 because it is faster.

If you haven't overclocked, I would strongly suggest doing so as that chip should be able to hit 4.3 Ghz pretty easy, perhaps higher. That's a pretty sizable performance increase.

I did mention not as powerful to the Xeon processors.

Thanks a lot for those useful information! I will go for 2x Xeon e5 2687w.
For memory I'll go for Corsair Dominator Platinum 64GB DDR3-2133MHz - 8 Channel Kit
Does Gigabyte motherboards support this dual processor ? I found Asus Z9PE-D8 WS. Do you suggest another one ?
What kind of cooler (as possible quite) are you suggest in order to cool down those dual Xeon in high performance ?
Finally, is it good enough a 1200w power supply ?
