Desktop image does not cover the entire screen AND a large area of blank/white space DOES: how can I fix ?

What is the issue, you have no icons or are you talking about the background image? Does it show up but small and in the middle? Check what the settings for the background image, try different ones till you find the right option for your image that works. Stretch, Center, Tile, etc...
