So basically, I am getting a new pc, but want to save some money, I plan on transferring the operating system to a portable hardrive and then to the other hard drive, is this possible, and if so how, please make it as simple as possible, step by step!

Is the Windows7 you have an OEM or Retail version?

If it came pre-installed on a computer, it is most likely an OEM version. Check the Product Key sticker on the computer.

If it is an OEM you cannot transfer the license since it is connected to your current motherboard.

Nope, you will have to spring for a new copy of your OS (Windows) unless you bought the retail version (which comes with both 32-bit and 64-bit OS discs). Otherwise, in all likelyhood, you have an OEM version which is not transferable from one computer to a completely different computer.

Are you planning to build it yourself or get another brand name computer? If it's a brand name, then it will come with Windows 8 and you'll have a Windows 8 license key (the key is built into the system, so there won't be a sticker). And all you have to do is just transfer your personal files over.

Is there a brand name on your computer?
For OEM like Dell, HP, Sony, Acer, etc it will have a sticker on the outside of the case.
For custom like bought from a shop it will have a sticker too and they should also give you a Win7 disc.
If there is no sticker and no disc, then it's probably pirated
