Ever since i upgraded to windows 8.1, windows update has been bursting up to 1Mb/sec (megabit) every 3 seconds, so it goes up and down, up and down, etc. I know its windows update because if I stop the windows update service (in task manager, expand Service Host: Local system, right click on windows update and press stop) my router and computer show the traffic for uploading drop. Here is my last 24 hours:

You can see that it stopped when I went to sleep and put the computer to sleep between 12am and a little after 8am. Why is windows update service doing this? In the last 24 hours, I have uploaded almost 3 gigs! Thats just 16 hours!!! And who knows how long this has been happening because I just noticed it.

I too had this happen to me before Win 8 continuously uploads data to net

So it looks like Windows 8 sends status info to microsoft 8 or 9 times a minute whenever a Windows 8 PC is connected. I disabled Windows Update on my machine and lo and behold the network traffic disappeared.

I spent about four hours on the phone to Microsoft support over several days. The calls would drop out and I had to redial and speak to someone else and repeat the whole story over and over. I got several different explanations from Microsoft. The predominant explanation was that Microsoft needed all this data from me to 'improve the service they gave, and to help other customers'.

Interesting... I wonder if that data is uploaded as part of CEIP. Rather than disabling Windows Update, try turning off the setting to participate in the Customer Experience Improvement Program. You can find it by typing Customer Experience into the Start Screen.

When I got my new computer with Windows 8.1 - suddenly my data usage went from an average of 400 to 1200 plus per day!

Finally, I found that turning off the so-called "Customer Experience Improvement Program" immediately reduced the data usage to its previous state. (This after contacting "Windows," "my computer manufacturer," "the store I bought it from," and a "computer expert" - none of these seemed to know this very easy fix!!)

If there are updates for Windows 8.1 they are made available by MS on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. So typically i checks you MS updates on the Wednesday after and then there won't be any until the next month unless there are emergency updates.

Open Action Center > Change Action Centre settings > Related settings > Customer Experience Improvement Programme settings > check "No, I don't want to participate in the programme" > Save changes.

Sorted !
