Canon MX870 printer says it's offline when it's not??

My Canon MX870 is connected to my network but it won't print because I keep getting the message that it's offline, even though it's not. Sometimes it says the USB cable seems to be unplugged, which of course I don't need to use. I don't know where to look next to figure out what might need to be tweeked or changed. Can anyone out there help me? Thanks a lot.:)

I've done that. Actually checked it and then unchecked it and it still doesn't print because of "offline" message. At one point I thought maybe something wasn't recognizing that it's on a wireless network because the message said something about the USB plug being not connected. But...it is connected wirelessly to my network so just don't know where else to check and see what's wrong.

Sometimes I'll get the "offline" message and just sit and wait and eventually it'll print anyway but the message never goes away??

Completely uninstalled and reinstalled the printer while also turning off windows firewall at the same time. So far everything is working fine so maybe I finally figured it out. Keeping my fingers crossed.

This worked for me with a networked canon ir 3220 c-1 for 3 machines , one of each, windows xp, 7, and 8.1. In the control panel click on hardware, then printers. Right click on the printer in question, in my case the one with the faded printer icon. Select Printer properties. Select the Ports tab. Click Configure port. Uncheck SNMP Status Enabled. Click ok and apply. That's it.

Well, I have the same problem with my MX870. Unfortunately, your suggestion does not work out for me as Windows 8.1 replies: "you do not need to configure this port". In fact, this is equal to "you cannot change this ports settings"... How did you manage to do this?

I get this all the time on my Mac systems as well. The only solution that works MOST of the time (not always) is to delete the printer and re-add it. Rebooting wifi doesn't work. Rebooting the printer sometimes works but usually not. I have this same problem on several Macs previously running Mavericks but now all Yosemite so that didn't help. The combination of rebooting the printer THEN deleting and re-adding the print drivers has always worked so far.

I have set my router to always give the printer the same IP address, 192.168.1.101 in my case. I can always hit the built in website on the printer using http://192.168.1.101 and get basic status, setup, etc. even while it won't print.

I think this is a case not specific to Canon, or HP, or PC, or Mac. It is a problem that the printer makers just don't want to put any resources into creating good, robust drivers as there is no competitive advantage to it. They are all terrible at this. I would pay way more money for the same printer I have if it ALWAYS printed.

I am about to write my own printer driver wrapper that just deletes the printer and adds it back every time I want to print in an attempt to fix this problem.

Thank you! This has worked for me! I have a brother machine and windows 7. I have reinstalled printer twice before which temporarily fixes it. Have just unchecked this config box in ports and it's currently working. Whether it will fix long term remains to be seen. Suspect my new firewall and anti virus could be root cause too.

I had this same problem with my Pixma MP990. Log into your wireless router and check the Wireless settings tab. Look for a checkbox that says 'Enable Wireless Isolation' If it is checked, uncheck it and apply. Open a command window (Start menu, type cmd in the search box) and ping the IP address of the printer, if the request doesn't time out you should be good. This fixed the problem for me.

Reinstall your printer driver. 1. Delete your current printer from the control panel. 2. Search the web for printer model driver and install the new one. This should do the trick.

Hi,
I had the same error and couldn't configure the port either (Windows 8.1 doesn't seem to let you,) and just changed the port that was checked to the USB001 port thing, and my printer started working again (it's connected by cable.) Perhaps just changing your port could help you.
