Today I booted my laptop, right after entering my windows profile password I got a BSOD. After rebooting I got a BSOD at the same time again and again. I booted once in safe mode, this worked properly. I rebooted normally and had no BSOD. After this I noticed frame rate issues. Checking the device manager I notice my gforce GT 540m card is not there (my onboard is still listed). Using a program called SIW I recognize an unknown GPU with a PCI-ID that confirms its my 540m.
Trying to open the nvidea config utillity or reinstall the 540m driver I get an error message stating i dont have a geforce card in my system.

What can I do?

Solution
Thats the problem why your pc freezes. Overheating. Take your laptop to local store and ask for changing thermal paste on cpu and gpu that will fix your problem. Good Luck

I reseted the CMOS (through BIOS options as I dont have a screwdriver handy) and my graphics card reappeared in device management! Should I do anything else or am I good to go?

Try running Nvidia Control Panel, and try to stress test your GPU with Furemark for about 10 mins. Take a look on temparatures dont let em go over 85C. If everything pass ok you are ready to go. Also pick my Answer for a solution :)

Using Furmark for only a short time (~2 minutes) the temperature raises to 95 degrees. I had to hook up the laptop to the adaptor or it would shutdown (despite high battery charge) - this also happens when I play demanding games.
