Extend system partition in XP?

I am running out of room in my C: (system) partition in windows XP. Is there a way to enlarge it without resorting to third party software? I would also like to enlarge the allocation unit size. I think I can backup the entire partition, delete the existing partition, and the adjacent partition, then create a new larger partition and restore the original partition from the backup, and making the recovered partition the boot partition. Can I do this with a recovery disk, or should I install recovery console? I have a second unused hard drive and an USB drive available. I am hoping to find some instructions on how to accomplish this, but cannot find what I am looking for.

Thanks for the answers, not what I was hoping for.
I was wanting to avoid third party software. In fact, I did use Easeus Partition Master once before on this partition. I also want to change the size of the allocation unit, which I could not do when copying the partition from my old disk.
I have to think there is a way to do this with Microsoft backup and restore. If my hard drive failed, there must be a way to restore the system to a new drive from the backups. If not, then in my mind, it has failed to meet the basic requirements for a backup and restore utility.
I should be able to back up all my partitions, pretend my hard drive failed, reformat the drive, create new partitions with a system disk, then restore the entire system from backup.
