So I am having a weird problem. I just tried to update my graphics drivers (Radeon 7970m) in a custom built laptop I have had for a year and a half or so. My screen went black and stayed that way so I restarted my comp. Now it won't boot from my hard drive. I'm getting a screen saying PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, check cable, and PXE-M0F: exiting PXE ROM. Reboot and select proper Boot device or insert boot media.

There anything I can do besides doing a reinstall of windows 8? Did my hard drives somehow get wiped? (The BIOS is recognizing my hard drives)

It's possible that your notebook maker used a custom driver for the 7970m, and the update wasn't compatible with your card model which caused your OS to be unable to boot...

This link will provide a step-by-step tutorial to fix your Windows 8. I strongly suggest not to use the reset option if you have important data on your hard drive, and get a technician or a techy friend instead to help you out.

Thanks for the reply doron. I will certainly try my windows 8 disk's recovery options. I was hoping to find a solution that did not need my disk as I am away from home until Tues. Also, not sure about custom drivers but this is not the first time I updated my graphics card drivers.

This is strange, I was about to suggest going to safe mode but for some reason you can only access it through the advanced startup options, which as you mentioned requires the installation media or UEFI and some preemptive configuration.

I'll try playing with my Win 8.1 notebook and let you know if I find anything useful.

Yes, I do not get any windows boot options. It seems my harddrives are being detected but it is as if nothing is on them. Never encountered a problem where the harddrives get wiped after a bad restart.

Thank you for your help!
