I dropped my 120Gb Samsung SSD upon opening the package

So I received my 840 Samsung 120Gb, opened it to find out the contents were packaged upside down, and it fell out onto my wooden floor. Having no moving parts I know it can withstand shock more than a mechanical HDD (And I hear no rattling when I shake the SSD, so nothing was knocked loose either), but how do I know if the fall didn't damage it, as this may potentially impact the performance in the long run? I was sitting on the floor when this happened so thankfully the SSD only fell about a foot, but I don't yet have all the components for my PC so I can't test it to make sure it works?

Solution

It's fine. Integrated circuits aren't eggs.

Alright, thanks. A similar thing happened while helping a friend build his PC, but in his case the SSD broke. I just panicked when it fell out of the box, expecting the same scenario to play out again. :)

Some SSDs have a high failure rate out of the box simply as a result of shoddy manufacturing controls (OCZ I'm looking at you) which has certainly led to a number of misattributed failures.

If the whole thing physically shattered I'd say that it's most likely non-functional but a simple one foot drop will do nothing to it.
