Hello guys

I am thinking of upgrding my cpu from a pentium g620 to maybe a used i7 2600 or 2600k.

is it worth it?

motherboard: p8h61-mx

Solution

Heres a processor that will do great with gaming
and a decent motherboard, but this is as close as you can cut it with a motherboard, and its on your budget. the Asrock z77 pro3.

these two will be right under or around 300..id say spend 10 or 15 more dollars and get the Asrock z77 pro4 instead, it has a much better feature set. (4+1 power phase vs 8+4) and will support higher quality peripherals if you upgrade down the road..

well that really depends what you are trying to accomplish with your PC...in any event that i7 will blow your current processor out of the water. comparing isnt fair lol

Like, i would love to in the future get a new motherboard and maybe overclock. The things i do is gaming, some rendering and stuff like that. I use it quite alot for gaming actually. I have a budget of $280 aud if you would like to suggest anything.

go ahead and post what you currently have, full spec list. then how much youre willing to spend in upgrades, absolute rock bottom number..well give you an idea of what is at least possible.

CPU: Pentium G620
MOBO: p6h61mx rev 2
RAM: 6gb 1333mhz
GFX: gtx 650 2g
PSU: 550w unknown
and all the rest 500gb hdd... dvd drive...

Preferred $250 $300 absolute max (aud) :)

Im torn betweeen two options for you..a core i5 with a new motherboard (80 dollar mobo range) or an amd fx 6300 with a new mobo. I use the fx 6300 because i do 3-d modeling and animation. so more cores is very important for software like that. The overclocking helps use the 2 cores that DO get used in gaming, gaming is a second priority for me. the rest should suffice..maybe upgrade the GPU next, but dont do that until ur ready to drop another 200
