That's nice budget pc you've mentioned. You also said you'd love an Intel CPU. But when t comes to budjet, Amd is good. I really recommend you to get a fx 6300, Which is less in price and performs even much better in gaming if they use four or more cores.
What makes you think that your dual core cpu could survive the upcoming 8 core optimised games. That's a rig which will survive till next two years. But with fx 6300 and Asus M5A97 R 2.0, you will a least survive till next 4 years and can save $10-$15. I am an intel fan, But when budget and gaming is the matter, amd is better. With respect, really don't go for i3 2120 if you are a gamer. Simply not a wise decision. When you don't have an option for budjet, most guys go for fx 6300 or fx 6350.
An i3 2120 will only be a bit better if the game is using only 2 cores. Thes days games commonly utilize 4 or more cores in which fx 6300 will kill i3 2120. Watch this link : http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i3-2120-vs-AMD-FX-63...

Unless you can afford a 3rd gen i5 ( or better intelpu ) don't go for intel in terms of gamng.

Ah ok took me a while to figure out what is going on, so you have the above, and want to upgrade for 500.

CPU: i5 3470 $189.99
GPU: Gigabyte R9 280X $299.99

'possibly' i5 3570k instead if in the future you upgrade the motherboard for overclocking, but generally the above CPU will give you the 4 threads and enough juice to run the GPU. Also as an alternative, GTX770 is fine, if you can find one that you like at a good price, it is anyway close to fitting the budget.

I think the I7 is worth it completely, you'll totally notice the diffrence from the i5 :)  I mean yeah sure the i5 works but i dont really see anywhere else you could upgrade other then things like cooling or Ram and you dont even need a ram upgrade 8gbs is plenty

For 540$
I think thats a good option :)

I was thinking the i7 was overkill? What about the i5 4670k?

If you can afford an 4670k Surely go for it. There's not really a noticable difference bitween 3770k vs 4670k n terms of gaming ( I didn't say that, Experts did ).

The system I have up there right now with the i3 the one I currently own. I'm looking to upgrade and I have a little over 500 USD to spend. I'm sorry if I was a bit confusing.

I am buying an fx 8350 ( $199.99 ) and a gigabyte r9 280x ( $299.99).
I already have an i5 laptop so just to be future proof and to make sure I'll suvive the games like Watch dogs and other upcoming games till 2015. So If you wan't to get an intel cpu an i5 3450 will be also good, but it's not unlocked. So try for an 4670k.

Do I have enough power to support the R9 280X?

Guys, look at his motherboard. 4670 need newer motherboard. If you want to buy ANY Hasewell (iZ 4XXX) you must buy motherboard with z87/b87/h87 socket. So if you want 4670, you must buy new motherboard.

Yes, your 520W Seasonic should be able to run the R9 280X just fine.

And there is no need to upgrade the motherboard for the i5 3470 as it uses the LGA1155 socket and should work with your motherboard. You 'might' need to do a bios update, but that can easily be checked from the manufacturer web page if you need to do that or not.

Update: And looking at the Gigabyte page all the CPU's are supported from the first bios onwards so you should be good there.
