Hi there,

I have been battling with the issue of an intermittently noisy CPU fan for quite some time. It will be quiet and then, seemingly out of the blue, will speed up and will, obviously, make a whole bunch of noise. This happens even when the computer is idling and I have no applications running.

I have cleaned the dust from all components within the computer numerous times, but this hasn't helped. I have also performed a clean install of Windows a few times since having this computer, but this hasn't helped either, which leads me to believe that this is purely a hardware issue and not related to any applications, etc. that are running.

My specs are as follows:

Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9505 @ 2.83GHz
4,00GB Dual-Channel DDR2
ASUS P5QPL-AM (LGA775)
1024MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 6870
298GB Western Digital
1863GB Seagate

Please see the images below for an illustration of the fast fan, high usage and heat.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks,
Amy

Hi AMD Radeon, thanks for your response - that article is very helpful. Apologies for not mentioning above, but I have also used thermal paste to combat the heat, but it has continued with its extreme fan spinning. Maybe I was applying it incorrectly.

In terms of the CPU Cooler, excuse my ignorance, but will this replace the fan that came with the CPU?

Yes it will replace the CPU cooler that you already have. I have the CM 212 EVO too. The results will amaze you the price/quality factor is pretty damn good with this cooler.

Bought the 212 Evo and a Cooler Master HAF 912 Advanced. So much better - thank you!
