Hey guys I still can't decide which GPU to buy -either the GTX 770 or the R9 280x. So anyone who has any idea how much Mantle will improve the performance of the r9 280x please post it :) Also will Nvidia ever decide to use Mantle if it has a phenomenal performance increase

It's not AMD only its open source so Nvidia could adopt it if they want, and I was asking if Nvidia are likely to completely overhaul their drivers to make use of Mantle if it increase performance by a lot

Mantle may be open and Nvidia could use it but I guess they won't. Mantle will be optimized for the CGN architecture on the AMD HD 7XXX and above. I highly doubt Nvidia will see the same performance improvements on their GPU's. Using it will probably make their own products look worse than AMD's.
I too am looking forward to mantle and have been looking for some kind of clue on the performance but AMD are keeping any information very secret as far as that is concerned.

How would it make Nvidia look worse it is a different API, i would imagine it to improve performance for Nvidia and AMD across the board. Anyway what performance increase do you think it will give.

If i HAD to guess on a performance increase it would be somewhere between 5% and 20%.
It would also depend on which CPU you are using as it is supposed to take some of the workload off the CPU as well as Optimize the GPU.

If you had to buy either a GTX 770 or R9 280x for BF4, Watchdogs, Assassins Creed 4, The elder scrolls online etc Which would it be

I would buy an R9 280x. Take a look at these Battlefield 4 benchmarks.

The R9-280X is already superior performance to the GTX 770, and Mantle is likely to add at least 20% performance increase. AMD driver updates provide 20-30% increases at times, and this is a deeper optimization. Just take a look at the games that Nvidia is usually optimized for, they are based on DX11, D3D. Then look at just how much better AMD is on games based on OpenGL. That is the kind of massive gain over Nvidia that AMD will enjoy with Mantle. They are taking what would have been DX, D3D games and making them more like the OpenGL standard, where AMD's massive computing performance reigns supreme. The R9-280X is about the greatest value when it comes to getting that compute performance. Newer GPUs focus less on it for gaming performance using the DX11 API.

The R9-280X is getting a slight refresh with a AMD's Tahiti XTL GPU in November. These designs are also supporting faster RAM than the HD7970, so the R9-280X at $299 is definately the greatest value performance option right now.

Take this with a grain of salt. When Mantle was presented they said that in their tests they achieved between 2-9 times faster draw calls than directx 11.2. In case you are not savy in programing that is a fucking lot even at only 2 times faster. Also you might want to wait a few more days. AMD has a developer conference this month and have planned a lot of talk around Mantle.

On a more personal note i have a gut feeling that Mantle will really be a game changer. There's no reason for you to trust me but i have pretty dam good instincts so if you can't wait until we have some more info go with the 280x.

"“The plan is, long term, once we have developed Mantle into a state where it’s stable and in a state where it can be shared openly [we will make it available]. The long term plan is to share and create the spec and SDK and make it widely available."

from your article

"Once", "Will"? That is not the same and does not mean it is open source now or ever will be be.

The best laid plans of mice and men and all that.

You may not be familiar with this, but AMD develops everything open. They are a leading member on about every insustry standard documentation for standardizing computing hardware so that software runs on everything with a fair chance. This is exactly opposite of Intel and Nvidia that do everything behind closed doors and pay software developers to optimize for their hardware. So I can assure you, that Mantle will be open for anyone, including Nvidia and anyone else. However, Mantle caters to the open OpenGL/CL computing strength of AMD GCN. Nvidia has poor performance in compute comparatively, so although they will be able to use Mantle, they will still not perform as well unless they increase Open Source performance. AMD's architecture itself is pretty well open, optimized from open industry standards.

I'm more familiar with with this than you it would seem as I know the difference between what is now and what might be, Mantle is not open source at this moment in time and whether it ever will be is something you cannot guarantee can you?

Monkey i will give you one thing. WE CANT BE 100% SURE. However in the spirit of competition ill wager you a beer that AMD will hold up to their word and open source mantle once it has been standardized.

Well sticking to the topic at hand - that is the Mantles Performance improvements and not AMD's copywriters - I am a bit sceptical on this topic.

The best answer is wait and see what they present at the conference this week (Nov 11 - 13) and see what they present.

All the talk before this is simply marketing - marketing their and DICE's products and also generating interest for their up and coming conference.

There is no doubt that Mantle will give a certain advantage but the questions is if the Mantle API will be utilized by other developers in a large scale.

And the numbers is not the only reason why that might happen. The ease of integration into existing engines and development cycles and also the financial aspects of it all. Is it a profitable product for the investors and developers?

Anyway...time for some DOTA!
