Hi,
I'm hoping that someone can help me out with a new build issue that I'm having.

When I attempt to start the system using the on-board on/off button the CPU cooler fan briefly turns and then stops (< 1s). If I disconnect the CPU 8pin connector then the CPU fan will run, as will any connected SATA disks. The BIOS error code remains at 0 irrespective of what I try.

If I remove the CPU from the socket and power up, then the CPU LED illuminates as expected.

System details:-
Motherboard : Asus Z87 Pro
CPU = Intel 4770K
Memory = 4 * 8GB Corsair Vengeance Low Profile
CPU Cooler = Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 2
PSU = CoolerMaster V700
Disks = Samsung 840 EVO SSD + 3 HDDs

The odd thing is that the very first time I started the system, it booted fine and I installed Windows! CPU temperatures looked good according to the BIOS (about 83F/28C). However after 2hrs of running it just stopped and has not Posted since.

I have tried:-
a) replacement Z87 Pro motherboard (RMA'd first one)
b) different PSU (Corsair CX600) (RMA'd V700)
c) tested CX600 with a Asus P5K Pro system (no problem)
d) the Asus Z87 both in and out of the case - still no post
e) Removed RAM to see if mobo would detect and report an error - nothing

Other threads report similar issues and seem to suggest that enough components must be connected e.g. fans, HDDs and even Graphics Cards. I tried an Nvidia 8500GT even though the mobo has on-board graphics - still nothing.

Could the CPU be at fault?

Thanks
Bodders

Alexoiu,
thanks for your reply. I will try your suggestion of the stock CPU fan :). And 'Yes' the Be Quiet! does use a CPU backplate mechanism to secure what is a considerable cooler mechanism. There does appear to be a kind of insulating material on the plate, but nonetheless it's worth a try.

Ok - swapped out the Be Quiet CPU cooler for the stock Intel CPU fan. Unfortunately it made no difference - behaviour is still the same.

Looking like a failed CPU?

Contacted the outlet that I purchased the components from and they are going to test the CPU, RAM and Motherboard #2. They will identify where the problem lies and replace items accordingly.

I did spot that the CPU appeared to have an 'aberration' on one of the pins. Conceivably this was as a result of the original sudden power loss with mobo #1 and so moving chip to new system has simply transferred the problem.

I'll report back with whatever the reseller finds - fingers crossed should be early next week :)

Thanks

Vendor has tested the various components and has confirmed that the CPU is at fault. This is to be replaced and, along with the motherboard, PSU and memory, will be sent back ASAP.

Hi!

I've got an Asus Z87 Pro with an 4770S that showed exactly the same symptoms as yours ,Bodders27, about two months ago. I didn't have the time to wait for warranty procedures, so I bought a new Z87 Pro and a 4770K.

Today that one also went down with exactly the same symptoms.

I'm beginning to think there is something fishy going on between z87 and 4770.

What happened for me, was, that I was playing FEAR (first version). I had played first and second level and after loading level three, the screen went black (turned off). So, I tried pushing energy save button (on power button), the system saved en shut down as it should (power led blinking when in power save mode) - after a few seconds the led stopped blinking and I understood that something had went wrong. After that - no matter what I do - the symptoms are the same as with my first Z87 and 4770. Fan starts briefly and stops.

Well, I didn't change power supply last time. But I tried another one, and it behaved in the same way, so I presumed it was okay.

This time I probably have to be more patient and use the warranty.

Darn pity since this setup is so fast and smooth. Nothing kicks the 4770 in single core apps, even if they don't use all four cores.

Anyone with some input or experiences?
