Computer not changing from headphones to desk speakers normally

This isn't something I've had a problem with on any other computer, but when I plug or unplug my headphones into the front jack of my computer, it usually takes a while to register, or something.

For example, when I'm watching something on Youtube, I might decide to plug it my earbuds mid-video. Sometimes my desktop speakers just keep going, sometimes I can't hear either for a while. Also, sometimes it fixes itself when I refresh the page, sometimes it doesn't. If I want to plug/unplug earphones in a game, I basically have to close it down, plug-in/out, and then launch it again.

I have Windows 7 32-bit, 8 gigs of RAM (been meaning to upgrade to 64-bit, just never got around to it), Radeon 7770 graphics card. Stand out background software includes Steam and Avast!

So far, the only suggestion that I've tried is to uninstall the Catalyst HDMI sound drivers, and that doesn't appear to have helped.

Thanks in advance.

Is your Line Out speaker system something other than basis stereo?

If it is simple stereo then interrupting the headphone socket switch should act simply as an electrical switch but if you are using a 5.1 surround system, for example, then the switch would have to act as a trigger to reconfigure the hardware.

If you set your output to 2.0 stereo, does the problem go away?
