I have tried everything I know , but now need help !!
when I reboot I get frozen at the logo/splash screen . The machine doesn't progress to the post screen
I get one very short beep BEFORE the logo screen appears which I believe means a successful post. The hard drive starts spinning and the gigabyte logo screen appears, but doesnt then progress to the post screen.

Hitting del,tab,f12 etc has no effect. I've tried a ps2 keyboard and a usb keyboard
Heres what I've tried:
I've disconnected all sata, ide and usb devices , leaving only memory and keyboard and mouse (ps2 connectors)
I've
1)powered down,
2)removed power cable
3)held down power on button to drain board
4) removed cmos battery for 1 hour.
5) connected 'clear cmos' pins for 1 hour
6) unpinned 'clear cmos' and replaces battery
7) powered on
but still the same..

If I remove the 2*2Gb kingston dimms then the screen remains black ( no logo screen)
If I boot with only one 2Gb dimm,I am still frozen at the logo screen as before.Ditto if I use the other dimm

When I plug in ps2 mouse and keyboard, the optical mouse lights up for a split second then the light goes off. The 'f' led (function?) on my logitech ps2 keyboard stays lit, but as I said , no keys such as tab,del,f12,end have any effect.

Both the 24 pin and 8 pin power cables have been connected ( and rechecked)
This is a HTPC machine that had been working fine for 3 years..
Any other ideas appreciated

we need more details about specs. (cpu, gpu, ram speed, psu, bios revision, hdd) is your psu set to 110V?

3) most stupid thing I've ever heard, 4) you don't have to wait 1 hour, 5) when you change jumper, you don't have to wait one hour either. always read manual for details on jumpers.

that version of mb has a lot of revisions. which one do you have? you'll find revision on motherboard inscripted.

read page 31 http://download. gigabyte .eu/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_ga-ma770t-ud(s)3_v1.1_e.pdf

re. points 3,4 5 I agree !! I have reset bios in 5 secs by shorting the jumper with a screwdriver in the past.. but as I've seen it as a last-ditch recommendation I tried it

AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE ... not overclocked. hidden cores not unlocked. (This was used as a HTPC an so stability was more important to me than performance)
Gigabyte GV-NX66256DP PCI graphics card.
The PSU is a Antec Earthwatts 500W... probably the EA-500. 240v supply
RAM 2*2Gb Kingston kvr1333d3n9/2g dimms
Can't tell you the bios revision as I cant boot ! but the mobo has v1.0 stamped on the pcb. The manual has a screen shot of the post screen indicating award modular bios v6.00PG
The HDD is an old WD 160Gb IDE drive.. but I get exactly the same freeze when no HDD is connected

I see you have a passively cooled gpu. there are likely to fail sometime. try a gpu from a friend, preferably nvidia (because of the driver you already have installed)

I replaced the GPU with a gigabyte gt220, but unfortunately I,m still frozen at the gigabyte ultra durable logo screen.

The fact hat I'm getting a single short beep before the logo screen appears leads me to assume the post was successful. In which case I'm puzzled that I don't progress to the post screen

sorry it didn't help for the first time. next, things you should check: another psu, plug only power cable, monitor, kb+mouse; test the memory (memtest+), but I don't think you could in this situation with your pc. clean your motherboard from dust. check if cpu cooler is properly attached, that plastic around the socket might crack. check for shorts, wires cut, stripping, something like that. I only listed a few things that must be checked in this situation.
