I currently have three favorite desktops I sit at...
1. Soyo Dragon 2 running an Athlon XP 3200+ oc'd to 2.8 with a GeForce 7800 Ultra GPU in AGP.
this is my old friend and trusted companion, we have fought many a Mechwarrior (entire series) battles and many many Warcraft tides of darkness campaigns.
2. My MSI K9VGM-V running the coveted Athlon 64 X2 6400 Black Edition with my first PCI card a MSI NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT,. This was to be the Grandson of my first build, but sadly it comes up a little short in a side by side comparison, sure it can play a few games like AOE III, Splinter Cell and Command & Conquer 3 better than my Soyo setup... but my 3dMarks are out of this world for the Soyo (14,886 vs 9,240) on the MSI.. and I can't figure it out.
3. My newest re-build (like starting in the morning) to my set is still considered old to you young whipper snappers but the old folks will love it.
An Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wireless Edition, rocking an AMD Phenom X4 9950 (I'm going to try for 3.2 OC water cooled) pumping gas to two NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2.
So there's my machines and here are my questions, (Oh and yes everything is max out as far as memory, SLI, PSU... if the MB can take it I've given it to them.)
4. At what point does the PCI slot become invalid for the new cards... I mean... if the 8800 ultra in SLI x4 was to die for, what does the 590 GTX really do? or for that matter like I was told on another post my little phenom will handle a 690 GTX...so how close are we from rendering the current PCI slot ineffective?
4a.Is SLI still a viable option? SLI memory, SLI video cards, SLI HDD's..
