I have an old pc with xp installed and I want to move the harddrive to a new box (retaining the operating system and all installed programs). I am having trouble installing the drivers for the new motherboard on the harddrive while it's installed on the old pc.

Solution
boot into safe mode on the old pc. remove all of the drivers in windows system device manager. leave the keyboard and mouse drivers last. then turn the pc off and move the drive to the new pc. on the new pc you may have to set the drive to ide mode if that the setting on the old pc now in the bios. when you boot up windows xp should install the newer drivers or ask for them. (if you dont remove the drivers or boot into the right sata mode windows will bsod on you.
