So I have an upgraded HP pavilion P7 1414 with windows 8 and stuff on it and I plan on building a pc and I am too cheap to buy windows and a new hard drive. The motherboard I plan to get(biostar HI-FI A85W) is compatible with windows 8. So is it possible to use my old hard drive in my custom one or would the software and other things on the hard drive prevent it? Thanks.

No, you will HAVE to reinstall windows. The CD key for windows for the HP will not work on the new computer.
