Recentally updated BIOS of Asrock Z86 Pro3 Gen3. Ever since Windows 8.1 fails to launch.

Found the manual... Asrock refers to it as IDE Mode instead of Legacy Mode. If you didn't try that, try it before attempting the reinstall. If it doesn't work, and RAID mode also doesn't work, set it to AHCI and then run the Windows install.

The Windows install will not affect BIOS settings or revert a BIOS flash.

Edit: Actually, also play around with the settings underneath the SATA Mode setting. Try flipping SATA Controller 0 and SATA Controller 1 between Compatible and Enhanced. You may yet yield a combination that works.
I'm going to assume you did not encrypt the drive using Bitlocker (which can cause a system to fail to boot after flashing the bios), so there are 2 things I can think of right away.

1. The SATA controller mode has changed back to default and needs to be set back to allow the system to boot. You should have an option for RAID, AHCI, or Legacy. AHCI is preferable, but if it is already set there (and assuming you did not have a RAID array configured), set it to Legacy instead and the system should once again boot up.

2. You had some custom overclocking options set in the BIOS which also got reverted when the flash occurred. This is much less likely though, as if you had done this, you probably would have made the changes again afterward (and would also probably know that those changes would need to be made again at all), and thus would not be asking this question.

And FYI - You can post in the same thread instead of making a new one if it is directly related to the previous issue.

I tried step one to no effect. Yet there is no option for 'Legacy'. Huh. Anyway. I can afford a fresh install of Windows 8 since I haven't really got anything important on the drive it is installed on. Could I do that while retaining my current BIOS I have updated or do I also have to reset the BIOS?

Would you recommended reseting the BIOS before a clean install of Windows 8 or keeping the updated BIOS?
