Hey I recently got a 780 from MSI and I have noticed whenever I am playing games like Battlefield 4 or Arma 2 that when I have been playing for around 10 minutes or so that the GPU usage seems to fluctuate from 90% usage all the way down to around 20% and then goes straight back up again after about 10-20 seconds then it will do it again. I have tried reinstalling drivers and going down to older drivers but nothing seems to work, it doesnt seem to happen when playing something like Starcraft 2.

My specs are;

AMD FX8350
MSI Twin Frozr GTX 780
8gb DDR3 Corsair Vengence Pro 1333mhz (Downclocked)
Asrock 970 Extreme 4 Motherboard
Be Quiet! Power Zone 750w Power Supply
1TB Main Storage Drive
500gb Random Storage

most fps fluctuations are caused by faulty HDDs

But why would that explain the GPU Usage drop from 90% to 20% in game which is when the FPS drops

BF4 is having alot of FPS drop issues with a lot of cards , its the game unfortunately, hopefully they get some better patches and drivers out for the game cos it is a mess.
Make sure you have the latest drivers from Nvidia and always do a clean install.
Tweak the clock and boost settings with MSI Afterburner and try to find a sweet spot which works best for you, In the meantime just wait for BF4 to get patched, the performance fluctuations are happening to a lot of players.

I was looking for a solution on other forums and someone seems to have a fix for the same problem he was having and that was to underclock the card from the factory overclock do you think that that could work, also the problem isnt just battlefield 4 its in games like ARMA 2 aswell.

first of all gpu heat and temp depends of sys load for ur description i say u r fine with it star craft didnt use any too much gpu and cpu too becos its a low end game that can be playable to any system with gt520 as example since while u checking the load and minimize the screen while playing battlefield 4 u saw 90 % gpu usage its normal after few minutes u see gpu load getting down with it its normal bcos sys is just concentrate on other application and give less load to the gpu and cpu so there if u again pull out the maximize the game u watch a lagg its also normal a glitch of system
since u cmd ur spu and gpu to run battlefield 4 at full speed so at starting while maximize bf4 window u watch a lagg it s normal

I have 2 monitors which I was using to monitor the system loads so I dont think that its anything to do with the system changing what it is concentrated on.

yes it does too while u gaming at one monitor other show up the system load the load should be howering upto 90 while u minimize the window the gpu load get minus u just fine with it bro dont need too much tension for u satisfaction i recommend u too make sure ur game have full updates and try
nvidia beta versions also defrag ur hdd and clean all temp files and close all program while playing bf 4 may be u shouldnt worry about that thing u also
noticed that while u playing bf4 see the mem usage by ur gpu and then after closing the game see ur gpu mem usage it also fluctuate too soo dont worry about it chill dude u got a good reg to run this beast game

I found found a solution that seemed to work for me, just disabling GPU boost and going with a static GPU clock just seems to have stopped most not all but most of the frame drops I think it may be a CPU overheating problem as it gets just over 61 degrees and then starts to stutter.
