Hi everyone,

I will be using the computer for productivity and gaming purposes.

The 7970 is actually cheaper than both the R9 280x and the GTX 770.

I'm gaming on a 1920x1080 monitor and don't intend to go up.
I'm also fine with both drivers from AMD & Nvidia.

However, I'm extremely interested in Mantle. I am not sure if it is worth the risk though!

Hope to hear some good advice from you guys!

Thank you (in advance! :D)

I think price wise you should consider the Gigabyte R9 280x which gives much better performanche than hd 7970Ghz edition. It is still better than gtx 770. It has only 2-5 Fps difference between Sappphire toxic r9 280x. The Gigabyte R9 280X is just in the line after toxic and asus matrix. It gives better performance than normal asus and sapphire r9 series, which are even expensive than it. Don't go for 7970 but try for r9 280x and then gtx 770.

If you will be needing CUDA cores, then go for the GTX 770. But if not, then you should opt for the 7970 because it's cheaper. About the Mantle, I believe it's open source so other companies can also use it. There are rumors spreading that Nvidia will also utilize Mantle. But for now, you should get the 7970 as it is cheaper and you have an assurance that it will utilize Mantle.

I don't see a reason to buy an hd 7970 over gtx 770 or R9 280x ( which is the best option ). The cheapest 7970 on amazon is XFX which is of $301 and rest others are equal to $350 or more expensive than that and a gigabyte r9 280x is $300 which performs near to a toxic r9 280x and even better than gtx 770. So consider this too.

There are more buying options than Amazon http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/#c=70,112,148&sort=a5 7970 for $260

You can get a 7970 for $260 with a 3-game bundle. The cheapest R9 280X is $290 with no game bundle.

The OP said it was the cheapest. I looked for an HD 7970 and the cheapest was $259 with free 3 games @ newegg. I also looked for the R9 280X and the cheapest was $305 with no free games also @ newegg.

Yes, but only the powercolor and XFX hd 7970's are cheaper than a gigabyte r9 280x. But sir, don't you think that price/performance will be better with r9 280x..??

Not really 13% difference both ways performance, price http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Gigabyte/R9_280X_OC/26.html

I know it comes with three free games. That's just one way of AMD to also keep selling their older gen gpus. All I wanted to say that is it really worth getting an hd 7970 over r9 280x..?, there's really quite a differnce between performance with those two.

I've seen these results before and that's what I wanted to say, It is really worth specding extra $40 for 13% extra performance. BTW I am really gonna learn a lot from you in these upcoming years man! thank you.

Finally! someone who agrees with me. And most of the people don't care much about the 3 free games which come with hd 7970. But they do care about best bang for the buck... like me. :)

HD7970 came out around couple of years ago it got overclocked and called HD7970GHz edition around 6 months later to compete with GTX680. Nvidia overclocked and renamed the GTX680 with tweaks in to GTX770. AMD responded and with taking the HD7970GHz edition renamed it and tweaked it in to R9 280X. I call them all current generation cards!

I just checked and I have most of the games in the bundle though :X

The price difference in Singapore between the 7970 and the R9 280X/GTX 770 is $50 so its a pretty big price difference.

However, my only issue now is what if the 7970 is out of stock, is the AMD or Nvidia better?

P.S. I'm video and photo editing. The OpenCL results AMD posted a while back in collaboration with Adobe looked really good though.

The R9 280X is a rebadged 7970.

Its a bit more than that, you have a cycle of refinements on the board that houses the chip as well. Yes, same main GPU, but reference board refinements.
