Why isn't my display working?

Okay so I wanted to hook my laptop to my projector and second screen using a svga splitterpluged into my vga output on the laptop but when I use it it only shows on the projector and not the second screen is it that I need more then a vga y splitter or is it settings I need to change on windows 8 help will be appreciated thanks

If unplugging the cable from the projector and connecting it to the monitor, does th emonitor work?
What if directly connecting the monitor to the laptop (no Y splitter)?

It should work. What distance between monitor and laptop?
Try connecting the monitor firstly, and after making sure that it works, connect the projector. Does the monitor loose the signal when connecting the projector?

Maybe it's only about 2 metres between the monitor and the laptop thanks for the advice I'll try that and get back to you
