Laptop won't recognize external hard drive

Hi everyone, my WD external hard drive encasing has been broken for over 2 years and i just bought a new encasing but it won't recognize it. The laptop indicates that a usb device has been connected but is doesn't show up in My Computer. I went to disk management and I can see the hard drive, but it says it's unallocated. I don't know how to proceed because I'm afraid I might format the disk by accident and I don't want to lose all my data. Does anyone have any advice?

Actually, when I right click on the hard drive in disk management I choose initialize and it gives me the option of Master Boot Record and GUID Partition Table. I'm not sure what to do, as I'm afraid that might erase all the data on my hard drive.
