Hi, I'm new here but I've been visiting the forum for some time and I hope this is the right place to post this.

I'm having some trouble with a pc and I'd like some help from you guys!

It boots up normally but freezes/BSOD whenever I try to do something a little more demanding than windows explorer. Then it restarts but with no video and I have to turn off the PSU and wait, like, 10 seconds before turning it on again.

I know that in these cases, the more information the better, so here's everything I've done so far.

It used to have these specs when the problem started:
ASUS P5KPL-VM
Intel Core2Duo E7300 (Stock)
2x2gb DDR2 800Mhz Kingston
160gb Seagate Sata2
GeForce 8500gt
Satellite 300w PSU

Since then, I've tried changing almost everything and its currently this:
ASUS P5KPL-AM/BR
Intel Core2Duo E7300 (Stock)
2gb DDR2 800Mhz Markvision
500gb Seagate Sata2
XFX 400w PSU

And the problem persist.. with the new RAM module, it doesn't even load the OS. With one of the old Kingston modules, it boots up fine but freezes/BSOD, and with the other one it crashes randomly.

With the RAM module that boots up, when I try to run the Windows Experience Index (Windows 7), I get the BSOD when it reaches the RAM tests..

The only thing I haven't changed is the CPU, but I'm hoping it isn't the case as I don't have the money to buy a new one right now.

I tried removing everything and just leave the essential: the HDD, one RAM module, and plug the monitor on the motherboard.. and it still crashes..

I tried running a memtest once, but it crashed during the test, and I haven't tried again.
I ran a chkdsk and it didn't resolve my problem..

All BIOS settings are default, CPU @ stock speed and voltages, I never OC'd and never had a problem with this pc before. All drivers were up-to-date when the crashing began (they're probably out-dated now since I can't even boot up properly)

I'm hoping you can help me out.

Thanks for posting on the forum, what I or many others will need to know is the exact error code of the BSOD. Are you able to view the screen long enough to get the code?

Hi! Thanks for the quick reply!
As for the code, sometimes I can get a look and sometimes is just too fast.. But the codes are different each time.. I don't remember any of them now, but some were about the memory and others were about the graphics card.. When I get home I'll try to get them and post here.. But there's nothing I can do other than that?

No problem. As for now, I wouldnt know how to pinpoint the problem to work on if your getting several differnt codes. What Ill need you too do is make it too where when the BSOD pops up, it stays up, we can do that by hitting the designated button to enter your BIOS settings, repeatedly on start up, scroll through the options and find a Automatic Restart option.. if its Enabled, Disable it. This option if enabled will make the PC reboot everytime it fails (BSOD's) With it disabled it will allow the system to remain on to write down the code. Once disabling it.. get as many codes as you can and return your results.
I would have you run some disk checks but at this point we dont know if its HDD related, and a CHKDSK /r takes quite awhile to run, theres a quicker but more uneffective option to run a CHKDSK /f .. but like I said, we dont even know its HDD related.. so we are better off waiting for the codes

I will do that once I get home (in about 5 hours) and post the codes of the BSOD..
I already did a CHKDSK /r but didn't find any error and the crashing persist..

On a side note, I brought the RAM modules (the Markvision one and the Kingston one that doesn't crash randomly) and ran a memtest and both worked fine.. So my first suspicion may not be the cause after all.. I'm beginning to think I've got a new but defective motherboard..

I also think you may have a defective mobo. Try and RMA it.

its very possible but we cant be positive w.o codes.. so once you get home make sure to get us any codes you get!

@Jason Hutchinson

Will do that!

@sora
I don't think I'll be able to do that.. I live in Brazil and the retailer only offers 3 months warranty against defective products, and I don't know if I'll be able to send it to USA for a replacement..
But thanks for the suggestion!

We got a similar problem at work , some time ago. I would ask you to open the PC case and observe the size of all capacitors . Do they look bigger ? I think it might be a problem which will not cost you too much. At work , our PC had 5 Capacitors oversized /thankfully not leaked out/ and when we try to reinstall the OS - it just hanged somewhere . We replaced them in a specialized shop and all went ok.

I'll check on that too! It would be much easier than getting a new motherboard! Thanks!

Thanks Yogi! This will be much better than having the system crash and write down all the codes! I'm going home in 30 minutes and will post the results here.

So I just got back home and finally managed to get all the codes I've got from the BSOD...

These are just the last ones, because I did a clean windows install when the crashing began..
I hope it helps!

Edit: I'm posting this from the faulty PC.. I'm doing nothing more than running the "Blue Screen View" and Google Chrome.. but I'm pretty sure that if I run WEI it will crash on the memory tests...

Edit2: Just as I predicted, it crashed! Here's the report:

ok I must admit, Im a little overwhealmed at this point lol. well I can start by saying that Each error has about 5 different causes. For examply, the 1st listed is Code 0x0000003b which can be System service, Device driver, graphics driver, or memory. 0x0000001a is also memory related and driver related. What type of ram are you using and are they mismatched chips or both the same? or is it 1 single chip? if you can, give me your memory specs.

I had 2 KVR800D2N6/2G from kingston, but now i left only one there as the other one was randomly crashing..
It is a 2gb DDR2 800Mhz, which the motherboard support with no special setting or overclock

Honestly every code that you gave me, is memory related. At this point, I would blame BOTH of your chips. If one is crashing and you remove it, fine, but to get these errors all relating to memory is obsurde. Did you run a mem test with MEMTEST86?? If not.. here are instructions on how to do so.. http://www.memtest86.com/technical.htm

I haven't run it before.. I'm gonna run this memtest86 right now, but how long does it take? It's almost 01:00am here :p

Edit: It seems the test froze..

how many tests did It run, and how many passed.. if u ran 2 or more and they all passed then this is NOT a mem issue.

I don't know.. The screen shows the cpu info and what I wrote before.. Sorry, I'd never done this before..

Alright, I guess it didn't even complete one test.. it just froze on 0:02:01 on all tries.. and I tried swapping the memory but the other Kingston froze at 0:00:14! and the Markvision froze before the test started, it even freezes at the BIOS!
One thing I noticed is that no capacitor is oversized like hunter86_bg asked me about, but some of them (the ones near the memory slots) were quite hot, and the memory modules were also hot... don't know if it helps..

If u can - please visit a local service center and ask them how much it will cost you to replace the faulty capacitors. It surely won't hurt and might only help. I still think it's a mobo problem and it might be the capacitors your big boy.

I'll give it a shot, but I don't think it's the capacitors.. On the other hand, the 3 capacitors near the mem slots get really hot when I boot the system..
I'll try and post some pictures of the mobo so you can see..

Here:
mekm.jpg
The red outlined capacitors are the ones that get really hot and those outlined in yellow get hotter than the rest

I saw 6 problematic Capacitors. Just go and get them serviced. If you have a friend -electrician , just ask him to do the job. Each capacitor does not cost more than a 1 $ each. So 5-6 $ is a cheap repair.

Really?! I thought they were all ok.. But I don't really know anything about capacitors, just checked if they weren't bulged.. I'm gonna ask my father if he knows any electrician and get it repaired.
The other mobo (P5KPL-VM) got damaged with a lightning.. The pc was powered down but apparently the modem transferred the electricity to the onboard network card.. Don't know if that is even possible, but that's what the technician said when I explained the situation.. then I asked him if it could be repaired but haven't heard from him since then..

its your memory, you MUST get new RAM chips.

I thought so too, but I've bought a new RAM chip and it's even worse than the other ones.. And I've tested both chips, new and old, on another pc and had no problem at all..
I'll see if I can get the old P5KPL-VM back and test the RAM and the CPU... I did some research and found that it could be the cpu's memory controller hub fault.. or not?
