Hey guys I am currently running a 780gtx and I am trying to get battlefield 4 to playable framerates in 3d maxed out or playable in 2d with 200% resolution scale. I would also like to be able to play games like the Witcher 2 with ubersampling and 3d and Hopefully the Witcher 3 maxed when it releases.

I am running a Benq xl2420t monitor so its a 120hz monitor @ 1920x1080 and when im not playing in 3d I really like having games run at 120fps if I can.

When I play Battlefield 4 now with my 780gtx overclocked as much as have pushed it so far
1240mhz on max boost clock and 7ghz on video ram I can get anywhere from 10fps -45fps in Fraps. The card is only on a refrence cooler and i crank the fan when I OC I could probably get the clock higher if I play with it some more or if i get an unlocked bios so i can get more voltage but I would prefer not to unless i stay with this card then i would probably slap on a waterblock

Looking at GPUZ i can see that Battlefield eats up 2.2gb of vram maxed when on 200% resolution scale maxed settings and it takes up the entire 3gb of vram so I don't know if I should be looking to step up to a 780ti with more vram or if I could get away with running another 780 in sli

Just looking for some recommendations on what would be a suitable upgrade. I know 2 780's would clearly be fast then a single 780ti but I do not know if the 3gb of vram on my current card will hold me back in the future.

Am i missing anything, the gtx 780ti also has 3 gigs of vram?! so second gtx 780 is sli will easily beat it.

Yep, a second 780 in SLI would be the best option.

Unless the poster wants to ditch the 780 for a non reference 780ti with more frame buffer

...anything but a 2nd 780 is going to be horribly cost inefficient.

It will probably come in a 4-6gb variant which is what I am hoping for

Only thing I am worried about with adding another gtx780 is that the 3gb of vram will bottleneck in games

This review says it all http://www.bf4blog.com/battlefield-4-retail-gpu-cpu-ben... , the gtx 780 sli is definitely better. For example, the 6 gigs of vram of the titan didnt benefit it a lot when it came to ultra hd res 3840x2560 more specifically http://gamegpu.ru/images/remote/http--www.gamegpu.ru-im..., i think this is the maximum res anyone can play at and max vram will be used here, i know that the gtx 780 ti is better than the titan but i took it as an example that even at high res, having more gpu power will benefit you more than having much vram with no gpu power to get you fps you want. For the vram usage with 200% res and MSAA 4x which i think is pretty enough for 1080p, the vram usage is is 2.8 gigs which means you have some room available and bfis well known for eating vram when it comes to its large 64 maps so dont worry that much about other games http://gamegpu.ru/images/remote/http--www.gamegpu.ru-im... . Since you like playing games with 3d settings as i can see, then gpu power is needed in priority to the vram, 3d doesnt increase vram usage but needs more gpu power, hope this helped.

EDIT: I am not saying that games will never use more than 3 gigs of vram, they will but the point is that you can simply put some settings down as AA that can fix the problem without decreasing any other graphical settings. But about 3d, if you have no gpu power, you will have to decrease graphical settings to maintain smooth gameplay, that why i said that sli (gpu power) is prior to the vram (780ti). AA at your res is not really neccessary at 1080p, it really differs from one person to another but i dont see that much difference by increasing AA settings to MSAA 8x, i think these settings are made for lower res that will have annoying jaggies that AA is made to remove them. In the worst case scenario, where even after decreasing AA will still use more than 3 gigs of vram, you will turn maybe textures quality to high, although i dont think this will happen any soon.
