So I have Comcast and the current router/modem I have (SMCD3GNV) is less than favorable. I wanted to get my own router and modem so I can get better connection. Am I able to do this? And if I can, what are some good modems and routers to get? Thanks

For the modem, it is very much recommended that you get one from the Comcast approved list. If you get something else, it may not be optimal, and their tier 1 help desk may not assist in case of a problem.
For the router, anything within you budget, from one of the major manufacturers, that has the features you need.
I prefer a separate modem and router, and recommend the Motorola Surfboard SB6141 modem and if you want an N router, the ASUS RT-N56U is a great router.
What adapters do your computers and devices have? Will you upgrade those and do you have to support old G wireless legacy devices?
