So i've bought 2 R9-280x's the First being the Asus Matrix platinum and the other being the Sapphire Toxic. I've had both cards running fine and then after a few hours or minutes it either crashes the drivers or the game and it also Artifacts like insane. I've reinstalled drivers by removing drivers and reinstalling them. i have had artifacting in the Asus matrix on just small things under light and medium load. the R9-280x Toxic was causing artifacting when i was playing crysis 2 and WoW and a few other games. The artifacting was really severe. The settings i used for all the games was max(usually ultra).

My build:
Intel 4670k oc @ 4.4ghz
Asus Z87-A Mobo
Crucial Ballistix Sport 1600 2x4gb
120gb 840 EVO
750W EVGA Nova 750G
Corsair H90
2TB Seagate HDD
1TB WD HDD Green drive
Windows 7 64 bit

Video cards used:
Sapphire 5770 Flex
Asus Matrix R9-280x
Sapphire R9-280x Toxic

If you haven't overclocked the cards, then it's a sign of defect. And I assume you've run each card individually to test for artifacts? The only causes of artifacts that I've ever seen have all been graphics card related. Not necessarily saying that both of your 280X cards are defective, but it's certainly possible.

Yes my motherboard is updated i always keep it up to date. alright, so for the power supply issue its definitely not that because I've used a EVGA Nova 750B and a EVGA Nova 750G on both cards and the artifacting continued. I'm currently using the 750G though.

well the other computer in my house doesn't have a case large enough to support the video card. i currently have the Toxic since I returned the Platinum. the Toxic is a pretty massive card its 12.3 in. There is no way for me to test it in another build.

I had the matrix platinum and returned due to artifacting on system idle. it didnt have the screen flickering issue. the matrix would cause artifacts on my desktop and taskbar either black or white squares everywhere. as well as artifacting in game but very minor . The Toxic was giving me more issues than the asus. Toxic has driver crashes i've used 2 driver version the Beta 13.11 and 13.10 the one that is on the support page of the toxic. It would cause screen flickering and artifacting. and games will stop responding after about 30min to an hour of playing.

This sounds like a defective graphics card. Artifacts are also a sure sign of GPU defect, but based on the fact that this flickering issue was introduced with the Toxic, it's only logical to suspect the Toxic to be defective as well. Can you still return or get an exchange for the Toxic?

Yes i already asked for a refund on my Toxic through Newegg. i shipped it out today so i am trying to find a new video card at the moment. im deciding if i should go for another r9-280x and try my luck or just switch to GTX 770. Im currently using my sapphire 5770 card on my build. This card is a boss its served its purpose for so long and still kicking. it can play all the games obviously not on ultra though.

Maybe you can pick up a fantastic deal on Black Friday or Cyber Monday if you're willing to wait until then. Who knows, maybe there will be $350 GTX 780s. I've seen crazy stuff like that before, but I was too poor to do anything about it...

Does the card in your other system cause the same symptoms on the problem system?

I wonder if you would carry out a little experiment - go into BIOS and disable half of the CPU cores.

Do you have the same graphics problem?

I have tried 2 Power supplies an EVGA Nova 750B and an EVGA Nova 750G both of them caused the issue. And as for the ram issue i have ran Memtest overnight and no issues have been found.
as for the testing it in another system is out of the question because the card is too big to fit in any other case. What would disabling half my core achieve? im curious never read about doing that to test it.

OMG! You are trying to diagnose a hardware problem with your system over-clocked?

In which case, you should write the names of the pieces of hardware in the system on separate pieces of paper, put them into a bag and shake it up.

Put your hand in, close your eyes and pick one out.

Don't get me wrong, you may solve the problem before the bag is empty but that is not solving the problem.

I am genuinely surprised. :??:

Instead of giving a rude remark maybe you could've helped me out. The problem wasn't the OC.

Anyways, i got a Evga 770 SC/w ACX cooler 2776-KR and seems like i have no issues with this card so far. i've stressed tested it and everything seems to be working fine. games do not artifact and the flickering problems has disappeared. it seems like the R9-280x was the problem since they are a new products they are bound to be faulty.

glad you got it sorted, but just to clarify, new products are not "bound to be faulty", that and they aren't new products, they are re-badged 7970's.
