CPU fan (4pin) is 775 socket - starts then stops when connected to mobo. But when connected via adapter to molex connector on PSU works fine.
MoBo: Foxconn G33M05
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.4GHz

I was testing a different mobo (which is now feared dead and being returned,) during testing I connected the CPU fan from my working rig in to the dead mobo which has a 3 pin CPU fan slot. Nothing spun so I just put it back in to my working rig. HOWEVER, since then it now just starts and then stops after 10 sec. Only noticed because I'm in the habit of running speedfan and OCCT whenever I move/remove components and the temperature for the CPU was climbing to near 70 degrees. Pretty sure a bit longer and I would be crying over a melted quad core CPU. I fear the fan is now damaged and have ordered a new one, but since connecting it to the molex connecter the CPU fan runs at 100% and temperature is back to 40 degree average.
I have already breadboard the rig running only the CPU, RAM, PSU and it still only powers on for 10 sec then stops spinning. To be honest the fan life is probably around the 50, 000 hours, and before this happened for the last couple of months it has made a whirring sound which are the ball bearings adjusting in to their position before quieting down again. So perhaps this recent event has just sped up the inevitable?

I've read lots of posts about starting and stopping of fans and advice to plug it directly in to the molex connecter, (which has saved me tonight!) but no one has stated what this actually means?
Maybe I have answered my own questions, but is my CPU fan damaged? Or worse is this a sign I may have damaged the mobo on the working rig? Again the CPU fan works fine when connecting it to the molex connector from the PSU. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading I look forward to any sensible responses.

Chris

CPU fan was at fault. Replaced with new lga775 cpu socket fan; AKASA cpu fan and it worked in the 4pin cpu fan slot on mobo. So problem was old CPU fan, must have finally given out.

Although temperatures of CPU are now 10 degrees higher for all 4 cores. Running CPU fan via the molex adaptor means fan runs at 100%. Whereas now it runs less so for instance before fan was running at 2000rpm now runs at 600rpm. Difference in cooling noted.
