Is windows 8.1 update free?

If i went out and bought a normal copy of windows 8 for my new gaming rig I'm building in a couple of weeks would I be able to update to win 8.1 for free or would I need to pay?

ok because I was shopping for my operating system about half an hour ago and on pc partpicker it had several windows 8s and several windows 8.1s and I just wanted to be sure

it is free ~
As long as that u have windows 8 ~
But u will need to update a windows update before u can see it from MS Store ~
